Tilia that was a replacement planting (circa 1988) to fill the gap in an old avenue of Tilia & Castanea that took a hammering in the hurricane of Oct 1987. I don't remember planting it but we helped clear the older trees that it replaced. This one went over in the pre Christmas winds, during a westerly that was recorded gusting at 40mph. Not particularly strong, but perhaps had taken primary damage in the stronger winds of earlier that month that reached 49/50mph gusts. Kretzschmaria deusta soft rot/facilitative rot decay in the roots and lower trunk.
